I watched your critique and thought you made a lot of good points, especially with sidebars and badges. It can be addictive, adding more and more little buttons, until next thing you know, you’ve got two sidebars just crammed with them. I’ve been stripping mine down on my blogs and it hasn’t lost me any traffic
Brent, This is just fantastic!!! I can’t tell you home much information I gleaned from your critique and it was done very kindly too.
) I have put so much of your advice to work on my own blog–music gone, gadgets minimal, buttons minimal, and working on my writing content and format. But listening to you explain what is distracting and what our goals are for the visitor is so helpful.
Just as a confirmation of what you shared and if it helps at all to the Pearls for me to add my two cents, here is what I thought.
The first two things I noticed in their blog that I thought were great were the family photos and the number of followers. The first thing negative that I noticed was the lack of a post…and I can’t tell if the content would be good or bad. I honestly didn’t feel any interest in reading their posts at all, just because even when I found it, it seemed more like advertisements than anything else. It had the same look as the sidebar gadgets to me. I didn’t feel I had the time to dig and figure out if they had a good post or not.
Also, my first impression after seeing the number of followers and the ads and gadgets was that maybe this is one of those blogs that builds traffic by constant giveaways and networking. I don’t know at all that that is the case, but I tend not to bother with those because I don’t want to enter giveaways or get the latest coupon etc. For those wanting a social blog, I’m sure they would love this one! I like information..or stories and would probably not stay here long.
I would have loved to see more photos of the family and stories about their family life. It may be that they have those here…but I wouldn’t want to have to dig to figure that out. If a picture is worth a thousand words, though, I have to say their header does the job!
) They look like a fun family that I’d like to get to know.
Hi Brent…me again!
I wanted to let you know that I did take most of your sound advice, and made some changes on my blog…..if you would like to check it out. I made a post about it (which you should be able to find now). LOL

Thanks for the critique, Brent!
I do agree with most everything you said, and sometimes it takes someone on the “outside” to see things you don’t see. I will be making some changes soon. Appreciate it!
