Most blogs are “failures”, if not now, they will be… that’s just a fact. They end up stale, boring, inactive and neglected.
The two most common reasons for failure are 1) lack of action, and 2) lack of perseverance.
Lack of Action
What I mean by lack of action can be defined by degrees: too little action, too conservative of action, constant procrastination or no action at all.
So what is action? Writing. Creating content. Topics. Ideas. This is where 98% of bloggers will break down. They are afraid to act. They plan. They nibble. They fear a critical comment or two. They fear no one will read what they’ve written. There are countless reasons for lack of action but it all boils to down to either fear or lack of discipline.
Fear of embarrassment, fear of failure, fear of ridicule, fear of mistakes, fear of mediocrity, fear of using up their one great idea and then having nothing left. Fear is an action killer, not just in blogging, but in life.
Lack of action is often a lack of personal discipline. You just don’t put the effort into it. You want a good blog, but you’re not willing to do the work or pay the personal price. Well surprise, Chief… all those people that have good blogs, and get a lot of traffic, put EFFORT – consistent dedicated work – into creating content. If it was easy, or the lazy could do it, it would simply shift the definition of what “good” is. (you thought I was going to say “if it was easy everyone could do it”, but that’s not accurate. Many things are easy, and everyone does do it… what happens then is, it moves or raises the bar for what is considered good or successful. This reality is what can give you a distinct advantage in our society. Why? Because people willing to put out a lot of effort are increasingly scarce. This gives you an automatic advantage in today’s world. Put that in your pipe and smoke it for a while. )
You have to take action. You have to take lots of action. Sometimes you’ll hear it called “MASSIVE ACTION”. Write. Create some content. You can refine it, improve it and master it as you go. You can’t even get to the “improvement part” until you learn to consistently produce the “action part”. The “improvement” part comes naturally for those who have the discipline to take consistent action. The “action” part is the obstacle most people never scale.
It’s hard for me to OVER emphasize this point. It is the #1 reason 98% of all blogs end up with a post about once every six months that says something like “I know I haven’t posted in a long time, but I’m going too, promise. Be sure to check back”. Yeah… that’s a winning strategy.
Perseverance
Following close on the heals of lack of action, is a failure to persevere. I’m mean come on, I’ve been blogging for a WHOLE month, and I don’t have 50,000 visitors a day. What a waste of my time. I quit. I’m discouraged. It’s not fair.
Seriously, when blogging stardom isn’t realized after a few weeks, the “fun” wears off and the “work” just isn’t worth it for most folks.
Folks, there are MILLIONS of blogs, tens of millions. The days of instant success for 99.9999% of bloggers is long gone. If you do a little research on successful blogs, you’ll find they have been at it for an AVERAGE of about 3 years or longer. That number is probably too little but it gives you a good idea of the effort involved. Most of them didn’t see STEADY growth, the growth came in unexpected spurts due to events or circumstances they never foresaw.
Most people won’t last three months consistently posting creative, decent content. Out of the small group that does go that long, the majority of them will fizzle out in less than a year. That leaves a high percentage chance or success for those that last the 3 years simply because so FEW actually persevere that long.
It goes without saying that those who do last that long will most likely be creating decent content too. Why? Because it’s hard to churn out passionless garbage month after month. You’ll get no readers, no traffic and no encouragement… so it’s not likely that a terrible blogger is going to last three years anyway.
Action. Perseverance.
Sorry… that’s the down and dirty. Anyone trying to sell you the “Seven Secrets of Instant Blogging Success” is making their money by… well, you figure it out… how are they making their money?
Like all business success, it takes time, hard work and discipline unless you’re ripping people off with gimmicks and junk… but that’s a whole other topic.
Action. Perseverance.
Action. Perseverance.
Action. Perseverance.
Action. Perseverance.
Action. Perseverance.
Action. Perseverance.
Action. Perseverance.
Action. Perseverance.
Action. Perseverance.
Action. Perseverance.
No shortcuts, friends. If you find one, be sure to share it with me, but don’t call it “Seven Secrets to Instant Blogging Success” because I’m already aware of that scam.
[Note: I'm speaking specifically to bloggers who want to build traffic, sustain an audience and/or eventually monetize their writing efforts. While action and perseverance also apply to the blogger who simply wants to put up some personal content occasionally, you wouldn't consider that type of blog a "failure" for inconsistent posting or even uninteresting content. That's not the goal for those types of blogs. If the blog is satisfactory to the owner irregardless of traffic or public interest, the blog is a "success" by that measure.]

I came across your website via a link on a Mom blog forum- maybe frugal.net? Not sure, but imagine my surprise when I come across a blog from an Okie! (I am here in OKC too!) Your family’s story is so incredible. You never know what strength you will be asked to summon in this life, and it is amazing what we are capable of enduring when we have faith. May God Bless you and your family.
Sincerely,
Fellow Okie- Jennifer Nelson
Hopefully we can meet soon, if you want… BR
Brent,
Really want to thank you for this one. I just started blogging and I really appreciate the advice. I really want to be successful at this. You’ve definately given me something to think about.
can you resend the adsense article? Please?
I have been discussing Perseverance for awhile on my own blog as well, I am even giving away an Autographed Copy of the book 'Perseverance' by author Carolyn Rubenstein which is about youth survivors of cancer and how they coped with the disease and how their families and friends who are suffering through this with them cope. I can't agree with this more. Perseverance has taken me farther along in a shorter period of time than even I expected. Glad I found your group, glad to be a part of it.
Awesome post Brent!!! I've been blogging since October…writing devotionals on a daily basis, and or sharing pictures, videos. As a Christian God keeps reminding me…'why are you doing this?'..I'll be honest, I LOVE the attention, lol..but why??? It's ALL about Him. To share the good, the bad and the ugly of my life. The struggles, the hurts, the sorrow, and the good..God taking my mess and making it His message of power and glory..And one woman commented about the traffic flow and people NOT commenting..God showed me this a long time ago (when I had an msn group'.."people are coming, they are reading, they are just too scared, to frightened to leave a comment"..So we NEED to persevere and take action…and keep reminding ourselves…we are not going to have a 'six pack' without having a work out!! it doesn't come instantaneously!! There is hard work to be done.
Your such a blessing Brent. Thank you for your generous heart to all of us. Praying Ephesians 3:20 and Jeremiah 29:11 over you and your family..((hugs))
Thanks Brent! I have really enjoyed getting 'noticed' in the blog world through the blog hop! Love your helpful hints for us beginners!!!
Thanks for this Brent, really encouraging.
Thanks for that last line… as I was reading the entire thing I was thinking… that's great, but what if one doesn't want "stardom", but just to share a piece of themselves on a daily basis and is happy to have some followers, many of them people who are in their lives (for real)?! GREAT post, btw… as is the one above!
Great post! I didn't intend to actually read the whole thing but you hooked me in! Everything you said was so true! Thanks for the words of wisdom and the encouragement that what I am doing does take time but my efforts are worth it if I just stick with it!
So, so true. I had a blog into which I poured my heart, wrote some great posts which rarely got any comments. Then I gave away a Pirates of the Caribbean DVD and got 80 comments! How depressing. But, I am more determined than ever now
Thanks Brent! Very useful info!
What about lack of visitors that leave comments! I have traffic but no comments!
I have action & perseverance
…actually not totally true, because I just gave up on my two memes…but that's alright.
I have noticed that if you visit others, they usually return the visit. Otherwise,…it's "iffy"…
I have decided that I will not conform to the world and I guess that's my own personal problem or hangup but I did not start or continue to blog to have "followers" but comments at least let you know…like feedback…
I know everyone recommends Twitter & Facebook, etc. but I'm not a "joiner" to all these gimmicks…so I guess that's why. I only pray that I have not offended someone. I usually write after praying & write what I think. I just don't like that you have to be part of a "meme" carnival to get reciprocity.
I still appreciate your informative help & willingness to assist!
(personal note) I'm so glad to hear & watch Abby and that prayers & wise medical treatment have helped her once again but I'm still praying! May you & Michelle & family get some R&R!
I can totally see your point. Though I have lasted longer than 3 months, there are times I get discouraged and I hate to admit it but I have gone over a week without writing anything for fear of what others will think, or b/c I just didn't feel like it. But I have met some great people in the last 6 months or so since I started blogging!
thanks for your directness. seriously.
So glad you added the last paragraph.
I feel like a success.
needed the encouragement to persevere. I usually post everyday, and am still doing that, to a large extent. But I sometimes wonder/feel like I'm doing it for naught. So thank you for encouraging me to work hard and persevere. Well said.
~Brenda
I couldn't agree more. While I would love to have the 200,000 visitors a month some sites get, I am happy with my 3,000. It is more than I expected. I hope to be around for a long time, but who knows right. We shall see where life takes me!
Brent,
Thanks so much for taking the time (in the midst of your amazingly hectic and productive life) to share your blogging wisdom.
I've been blogging regularly for over five years and understand your well taken point about the the challenge of churning out interesting stuff for longer than a few months. It's not easy but it sure is a lot of fun!
Your future posts on the subject of blogging are being awaited with great eagerness–thanks again for sharing your wisdom.
By the way, the post you wrote about Google's Adsense was sobering and is making me contemplate pulling their ads from my site. (I just starting using Adsense this month.) What are your thoughts on Blogher ads?
And by the way, as the mom of a cancer surviving daughter, my heart is with your family as you walk that road.
Blessings,
Becky Smith

Thank you for sharing. I've been blogging for almost 6 months. I enjoy it and have a small reader base. I'm very happy with them but also hope to grow. Thank you for this reminder!
